Dreams

Usually, my dreams aren't plausible. Usually, I'm in a desert, flying, running for my life or just dead. Lately, I've been having dreams of events that could really happen. For example, I dreamt that a client sent me an email because he couldn't access the account for his website. It's a very simple dream, but it could very well happen. I know it can happen, because a few days ago, I moved his website from one server to another and accounts information has changed.  Premonitions? Maybe. I hope so. I'm one of the people who would like to know …

Stereotypes: math and gym, nerd and jock, body and mind

I spend a lot of time in the past today. I had to do some self cleaning.

In movies and television programs, it is made clear that a high school student can not be good at both intellectual and physical activities. The jock is captain of the sport team and he sucks at anything that requires brain cells. The nerd is a library rat who spends his days in books and he sucks at sports.

In high school, I didn’t really fit in either of those stereotypes. I wasn’t captain of any sport team and not even of any chess club. I …

An efficient Facebook homepage

After 2007, Facebook started screwing up their homepage. Since then, the best move they’ve made, from a design point of view, is to make the page wider. Even so, the layout isn’t optimized.

For example, currently, on the left column, nothing is happening under the filter list. White space can be powerful in design or it can be wasted as it is in this case. The second column is just the feed. It’s fine as it is for now.

The last column is filled with various types of information and they are all displayed in the wrong order. Wrong means that the …

Stop supporting Internet Explorer 6

We are back to one year ago. One year ago, I declared that I was actively blocking visitors who are using Internet Explorer. Read carefully, I said “block”, even though my website back then was displayed properly on IE6. Today, 2009 is coming to an end and since 2001, the release year of IE6, two newer versions of Internet Explorer have been released. With that in mind, can someone tell me why “web people” are still trying to get websites to work in that outdated browser and why consumers are still using it?

Last year, I blocked IE6 users …

Apple Magic Mouse

Apple’s new Magic Mouse is certainly slick. It’s like a mobile trackpad. As a Macbook user, the only problem I have with additional hardware is that it’s… additional hardware. I like the all-in-one package that is provided by every laptop. The multi-touch trackpad is already extremely easy to use.

The Magic Mouse may be the first of its kind, but it’s still a mouse and it’s still one more object on the desk. It just came out today and everybody is …

Some details about the next Facebook home page

A document has been leaked concerning details about the next version of the Facebook home page. As I remember, every time Facebook changed its design, many users were not very happy about it. However, when I look at the document, at first sight, I don’t see many differences.

The greatest change is that the publisher is gone. Instead, a click is required to “Update Status”. There are also links for “Top News” and “Recent Activity”.

The new Facebook home page will basically be …

I have great friends

I do and I acknowledge it right here, right now. I am not going to wait for some tragic event before I say it. That’s what most people do:

Someone close to them or themselves have cancer and suddenly, some non-profit organization finds itself with a new source of income.
They get in trouble, lose their house, their car, almost everything, so they ask help from their friends who help them and it’s only then that they find out and acknowledge that they aren’t alone and they have great friends.
Etc.

Why do people wait for tragic …

My website will contain my blog

In a previous article, I wrote that I was revamping my website. In the process, I always had in mind the idea of keeping my blog and website separated. My website would have been located at longzero.com and my blog would be at longzero.posterous.com.

Yesterday, I had a quick training in SEO and it reshuffled everything in my brain concerning that decision. By reshuffling, I mean that everything has been placed back where it should.

The main reason for me to design my website over again is to attract new clients. My blog has been a positive force in …

Means of communication, does it really matter?

Every time I receive a message, whether it’s on Twitter, Facebook, email, SMS or other services, I receive a notification on my iPhone. All notifications are the same; they pop up with the message and two buttons, one lets me ignore the message and the other lets me answer it.

If I decide to answer the message, I tap on the appropriate button and the appropriate application that will let send a proper reply will open. After having gone through this process a few times, I began to wonder if the means of communication really matters since I still receive messages …

8.5 pounds in 2 weeks

The explanation of this weirdness is quite simple. Same amount of weight, same amount of time and same source of posting; both of these Facebook friends got their account hacked through their mobile devices.

You haven’t seen any weird status updates from me, have you? If you have, then let me know!

The beginning of my new website

Lately, I have been thinking of redesigning my website which serves as my online portfolio. The reason is because my current one isn’t doing justice to what I can do as web designer. It lacks purpose and clarity. What it currently is, is a page with a series of links that point to websites I have created. In other words, all the link are making visitors leave which isn’t really my objective.

So what’s my objective? To get people to see that I can do a good job and to get people to hire me.

In order to reach that objective, …

Someone among my Facebook friends passed away

I didn’t know her very well. I met her at Montreal’s monthly Yulblog event, we talked, we added each other on Facebook and that was it. Like I said, I didn’t know her very well. Today, I learnt that she died.

People on Facebook could remove me from their friends list anytime and I wouldn’t care, but death… Let’s get real, death doesn’t compare. Apparently, I care if somebody dies among my Facebook friends. I seem to care enough to write about it. Maybe it’s because it wasn’t a naturally death. Indeed, this lovely woman was killed by some …

Anger made me create my own iPhone stand

I love anger. It’s a great feeling, because it makes me creative and productive. No other feelings can make me as creative and productive as anger.

Today, I discovered the iPhone paper stand dock made by Julien Madérou and I got angry, because I didn’t think of it. I originally wanted to reproduce it to use it myself, but I was too lazy to look for a knife to cut the paper properly.

Instead, I looked at objects around me to see if I could make my own iPhone stand without cutting anything. I saw some …
