Little Big Soldier is a historical war movie with Jackie Chan. It's a drama/comedy fresh out of Hong Kong. I am not a big fan of war movies. I find that they often depict the horrors of war way more than the cause of them when they should be suggesting solutions. Little Big Soldier offers both; the cause and the solution in a wonderful joyous way.
The movie tells the story of a soldier who captures an enemy general to bring him back to his land with hopes of being released from service. Both of them are the last survivor of a big battle.
As the story progresses, you find out that none of them wanted war. Of course nobody does, it always just happens. All the general wants is peace. All the soldier wants is his freedom so he have a family. The only worry he wants is to wonder what to grow on five acres of land.
Jackie Chan has a trademark that can't be found in movies but you can only find it in the audience: the smile. If a different actor played the role, this would have been entirely a drama.
The movie is light-hearted. There is no blood lust. The landscape is gorgeous.
I said it's a war movie, but it's also a movie about peace. About hope. About doing the right thing.
It's the most joyous war movie I have ever seen.
"If there wasn't war, we could have been friends."
